Call for Entries: Maryland Young Writers' Contest

Baltimore's Child and CityLit Project are now accepting entries for the second annual Maryland Young Writers' Contest. Last year, nearly 400 entries were submitted from around the state in both prose and poetry categories across high school, middle school, and elementary school age groups.
Students in grades 3-12 who attend school or are homeschooled in Maryland are eligible.
Submit prose (short stories or plays) or poetry of up to 1,000 words. All entries must be typed and double-spaced, and include the student's name, grade, and school along with the name of the student's parent, phone number, and e-mail address.

In the Dark

It was a dark and stormy night. I couldn’t get to sleep. As I looked at the clock, I heard a slight breathing noise coming from under my bed. It just turned out to be my cat, Fluffy. But after Fluffy had left my room and when I was finally drifting off to sleep, I could still hear that breathing noise. And I didn’t have any more pets!!! nervously I looked to see if it was my sisters, but nothing was under my bed! I got some clothes on and called the othersiders. Their specialty is tracking strange and spooky wonders. As I walked out they were standing mysteriously behind a tree. As I walked over, they were still as the tree. I noticed they were standing behind one. When I came up to them, they had white pale faces. When I touched them, they were ice cold. The problem is it was summer!

I felt a slight chill going down my back. I turned around to see a figure to some point looked like me! I asked who she was. She said her name was Kelli cooper! I could not believe it! The ghost was me! The weird thing was I wasn’t dead yet! As I was walking back to my house, the ghost started to follow me. When I started to run, my toes began to feel numb I could not move. my toes felt as cold as ice, they started to turn blue and purple. then my whole body began to freeze. The ghost caught up with me and said,” stop I am not here to hurt you, I need you to help me”. I almost fainted, but I couldn’t move. She unfroze me, except my feet, so I couldn’t run away. “What can I help you with, I asked?” “I need you to go on a journey for me to help me find my lost body”, she said. But if you’re me, shoulden’t I be your body? I asked confused “you should but the spirits are telling me that there is another kelli cooper lost somewhere in the sky worlds”, she said. “What are the sky worlds?” I asked. “ it is a place I n the sky where all souls without bodies are and bodies without souls are ”,she said. AS I was catching up to her she led me to a portal. When you looked through the portal, you could see the sky worlds.

Knowing that there were that many levels, I quickly ran back through the portal and grabbed two jet packs from the frozen othersiders (one for me and one for k.c. ghost).

The air was thick and really light. It felt so nice and cool. As I looked around, everyone looked dead. When you came up to them, they smelt really bad; it was like they had slept in a garbage can! I looked into the distance; I could see a soul and a body reunite. The body didn’t look so dead after that. I wondered if the K.C. was on this level. Because I didn’t want to pass this level and miss her. That would be terrible!!!! I walked thoroughly through the crowd (literally!). I saw many strange looking souls and bodies in there. I saw one soul that looked like it was a living nightmare!!! This animal had three heads, ten arms, twenty legs, and a million teeth. It had chains going through its body and spikes coming out the top of its heads. This thing was so scary that even when it looked itself in the mirror, it was scared too.

If you know the story “In the Dark”, then you will know a little bit about the sky worlds. If you don’t, close this book and read “In the Dark”! The sky worlds are an important part to “In the Dark” because that is the main setting of the story.
Last Hour

I will lie there in peace
With my children in hand
Hearing my grandchildren on the phone
Saying “I love you grandma”
Then telling them I’m going will be okay
I will be happy where I’m going
As the clock keeps turning its hands my life slowly slips away
Finally I go saying my last words to my family
Then coming into a sea of light, warmth and happiness surrounds me
